Farms and Community Groups featured in GAINING GROUND:
SUN GOLD FARM is a small, sustainable family farm located in the beautiful, fertile Tualatin Valley near Forest Grove, Oregon. The farm lies along West Dairy Creek, probably named because of the many dairies that used to be in this part of the county. Sun Gold Farm is owned and operated by Charlie and Vicki Hertel, and their children Chris and Stephanie. Their primary source of income source is fresh market crops that they sell directly to the consumer at various farmer’s markets and through a CSA. Sun Gold Farm does not use GMOs or pesticides.
URBAN TILTH cultivates agriculture in west Contra Costa County to help their community build a more sustainable, healthy, and just food system. They hire and train residents to work with schools, community-based organizations, government agencies, businesses, and individuals to develop the capacity to produce 5% of their local food supply.
STALFORD SEED FARMS/GREENWILLOW GRAINS – Stalford Seed Farms, owned by Harry Stalford and his wife Willow Coberly is the largest grass seed farm in Oregon. Since 2007 the farm has begun a transition to growing organic grains as well as grass seed. Their organic wheat, rye, oats, tricale and other organic grains are milled and marketed through Greenwillow Grains.
SUNBOW FARM – HARRY MacCORMACK – Harry MacCormack started farming at Sunbow Farm in 1972. He has always grown a wide variety of organic vegetables, fruits, beans and grains. To market his produce he co-founded the Corvallis Saturday Market and the Peoples Wednesday Market in Portland. He was also a co-founder of Oregon Tilth, which established USDA guideline for organic certification.
We also work with a number of community groups engaged in working to build a local, sustainable and healthy food system.
